The Gate.io crypto exchange was founded back in 2013 on the Chinese market — today it is one of the top 10 trading platforms in the cryptocurrency world and ranks second in terms of spot and contract liquidity worldwide. Its founder and current CEO is Lin Han, who holds a PhD in optics and is described as “one of the earliest supporters of Bitcoin and blockchain.” In 2017, due to new Chinese policies, the company moved its operations outside the country and entered the global market.
Over the past 12 years, Gate.io has not only gained popularity and user trust but also launched numerous products — the payment service Gate Pay, the incubator Gate Labs, the Web3 wallet Gate Wallet, and of course, the crypto card.
Today, Gate.io serves over 21 million clients worldwide, and its card allows payments with 2.000+ digital assets across the entire European Union.
Features of the Gate crypto card
The Gate Crypto Card functions like any other card — allowing users to pay with crypto at any point of sale without prior conversion. The exchange happens automatically at the moment of the transaction, while the merchant receives the fiat currency they support.
- The card is only available within the European Union. To use it, identity verification is required. More than 2000 assets are available for card top-up.
- The card balance is directly linked to your balance on the Gate.io crypto exchange.
- Gate Card also offers cashback — 1% on each transaction at the basic level, up to 7% for select offers. New users receive 2%, and Card Silver holders get 4%.

We’re launching our first Gate Visa Card to simplify the transition from fiat to crypto! We hope it will bridge the new with the existing, allowing users to spend their crypto anytime, anywhere — a big step toward global financial inclusion, — said Lin Han.
How to apply for and start using the Gate Card
To apply for a Gate crypto card, you must be a resident of one of the supported countries — and the list grows each year. Then follow these steps:
- Register a Gate.io account (if you’re a new user). Link your phone number, email, and enable two-factor authentication.
- Verify your identity by submitting your name, personal information, and residential address. You’ll need to upload a copy of your ID and complete a liveness check. Your residential address will be used for card delivery.
- Visit the Gate Card page on the website or app. Go to the “Finance” section, select “Gate Crypto Card” and click “Submit”.
- After submitting, your application will be reviewed within minutes. If additional checks are required, the process may take 3–5 days. Confirmation will be sent to your registered email.
Once approved, you need to activate your card. To activate a virtual card:
- Log in to your account and go to the card management page.
- Select the card and click “Activate Virtual Card”.
- Confirm via a verification code sent to your email or phone. Your card is now active.
- Link it to Google Pay for contactless payments.
To activate a physical card:
- After receiving the card, log in and go to “My Gate Card”.
- Click “Activate Physical Card” after reviewing the terms.
- Enter the last 4 digits on the back of the card and the 3-digit CVV code.
- Enter the verification code sent to your email or phone.
Fees and limits
- Transaction Fees: 0% in EUR, 0.25% in other currencies within the EU, 2% outside the EU
- Conversion Fee: Flat rate of 0.9%
- ATM Withdrawal Limits: up to 3 transactions per day and 50 transactions per month, daily limit – €25.000, monthly limit – €50.000
- Purchase Limits: up to €1.000 per day, up to €5.000 per month — no fee

Drawbacks
- High top-up and conversion fees: a 0.9% conversion fee is charged when topping up. Payments in non-euro currencies incur extra fees.
- Limited payment system support: the card does not support Apple Pay, which may be inconvenience for iPhone users.
- Low cashback: the base cashback is just 1%, while other cards offer up to 4%.
- Daily spending restrictions: a daily limit of €10.000 may be too low for high-volume users.
- Geographic restrictions: the card is available only in the European Economic Area (EEA), limiting its use outside the region.
Given these limitations, potential users should carefully weigh the pros and cons of the Gate Card, especially if they plan to use it outside the EEA or require more flexible terms.
